Computational Scientist

Overview

Under general supervision, provides technical assistance and analysis during planning and execution of Product Service Line (PSL) operations for customers, maintaining the highest levels of professionalism, safety and service quality. Works on value add projects through collaboration with both internal and external customers based on technical knowledge and developments to deliver solutions to meet their requirements and Halliburton's commercial expectations, considering both the price of the solution to the customer as well as the total cost to Halliburton to deliver it. Applies engineering, mechanical and geological principles to articulate more complex data interpretations to customers from proprietary software and collaborates with clients through the entire well cycle from drilling to completion scenarios independently. Actively completes training and competency assignments to pursue growth and development within the PSL career path and Halliburton organization. Fosters teamwork among all personnel involved in the performance of work activities, and supports the development of less experienced operators and/or technical personnel. Shares learning and advertises successes by writing, publishing and presenting case histories and industry papers (for example, Society of Petroleum Engineers-SPE).

Job Duties

We seek a talented Computational Scientist with an M.Sc. in Computational Science or Engineering and academic and/or professional experience. A Ph.D. degree with a strong background in Computational Science is a plus. The ideal candidate for this position is an expert in porting complex scientific programming codes to parallel hybrid (CPU+GPU) clusters. You must have a passion for optimizing and improving code speed-up. Excellent problem-solving ability and good oral and written communication skills in both English and Portuguese are required.

You will join a multidisciplinary and diverse team of scientists and engineers committed to delivering high-end computational technologies and tools for the O&G and broader Energy industry.

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of modern C++ (e.g., C++11, C++14, C++17).
  • Expert knowledge of GPGPU frameworks/software layers such as CUDA and OpenCL.
  • Expert knowledge of distributed and parallel computing in hybrid (CPU and GPU) clusters.
  • Good knowledge of device-level optimization and GPU architecture.
  • Good knowledge of modern C++ design patterns and software engineering concepts (e.g., template metaprogramming, generic programming, etc.).
  • Ability to work in both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Some experience with programming/scripting languages such as Python and Matlab.
  • Some experience with MPI programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven experience porting legacy serial or MPI/OpenMP code to GPUs.
  • Knowledge of scientific computing (e.g., linear and nonlinear solvers, numerical methods, etc.).
  • Familiarity with computational mathematics (e.g., linear algebra, calculus, matrix decompositions, etc.).
  • Knowledge of PDE discretization methods, such as Finite Element, Finite Volume, or Lattice Boltzmann.
  • Familiarity with open-source scientific computing libraries (e.g., HYPRE, BOOST++, PETSC, DUNE, LAPACK, etc.).
  • Familiarity with CMake, Makefiles, and other tools for multi-platform code compilation.
  • Knowledge of fluid flow physics.
