Senior Counsel - Assistant General Counsel

The attorney in this role will advise on a wide range of complex environmental matters, including regulatory compliance, permitting, enforcement, safety, transactional issues, and environmental liability. The ideal candidate will have expertise across multiple environmental domains, such as air, water, waste, remediation, safety, explosives, and radiation.

Job Duties

  • Serve as lead HSE attorney for organization and lead HSE Legal Team
  • Oversee a global docket of environmental regulatory, administrative, and enforcement matters
  • Support internal HSE investigations/audits and manage outside counsel
  • Advise on pertinent environmental policy, regulatory, sustainability, and legislative developments
  • Sophisticated environmental experience with administrative proceedings and enforcement matters; strong advocacy and negotiation skills; thorough working knowledge of regulatory compliance, sustainability, and environmental permitting
  • Provide strategic legal counsel on environmental components of complex commercial transactions
  • Provide counseling on operational HSE requirements under the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA, TSCA, EU & UK REACH, OSH Act, and other core HSE laws on a global basis
  • Provide counsel to ensure compliance with regulatory obligations under Superfund and state counterparts
  • Develop and execute complex legal, technical, and regulatory strategies across an array of environmental projects
  • Identify emerging new laws/regulations and proposed changes to existing regulations, assessing their impact on the business

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • Juris Doctor (JD) required for U.S. positions
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently while managing competing deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; proactive team player with strong business judgment
  • Respond to formal and informal notices of non-compliance received from regulatory bodies
  • Analyze and advise business on potential environmental, health, and safety issues
  • Implement business priorities across HSE legal, identifying areas for improvement, and standardization
