Abingdon_Computer Science/Data Science/Artificial Intelligence Intern

Abingdon, England, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are looking for the right people — people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

About the role:

We are looking for curious, ambitious interns to join our AI Foundation team, working on next‑generation AI systems that transform how subsurface knowledge is represented, accessed, and acted upon.

You’ll work at the intersection of generative AI, knowledge graphs, spatial data and autonomous agents, helping us prototype and build intelligent systems that assist domain experts in extracting insight from complex, large‑scale scientific data. This is handson, applied AI with real impact on industrial decision‑making.

You’ll be embedded within multidisciplinary teams of AI engineers, data scientists and subsurface experts, contributing directly to exploratory platforms that shape future products.

Job Duties

What You’ll Work On

Intern projects are scoped with your interests and background in mind, and may include:

  • Building AI‑ready subsurface knowledge representations
  • Developing autonomous subsurface AI workflows
  • Applying generative AI to real scientific data
  • Prototyping frontier AI patterns
  • Working with spatial and relational data at scale

Technical Environment

You’ll gain practical experience with a modern applied AI stack, including primarily:

  • Python for core development and experimentation
  • Large Language Model tooling (e.g., agent frameworks, orchestration, evaluation)
  • Knowledge graphs and vector‑enabled databases
  • Relational and spatial data platforms
  • Cloud‑hosted AI services
  • Exact tools and architectures evolve rapidly therefore value strong fundamentals and curiosity over narrow tooling experience.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
  • Strong Python programming skills and understanding of good software practices
  • Experience applying machine learning or generative AI techniques
  • Familiarity with working in collaborative codebases using version control
  • Comfort working with data pipelines, APIs, and structured data
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative, learning‑oriented mindset
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills, with a proactive, learning‑oriented approach.

Desirable

  • Interest or experience in knowledge graphs, NLP, or agentic systems
  • Exposure to databases, geospatial data or geoscience data domains
  • Experience with cloud platforms or containerized environments
  • Curiosity about applying AI beyond toy problems, in complex real‑world settings
